time is love

I love that phrase. it is from a currently popular country song (of that title, I believe). It's true. The best display of what you care about is found in how you spend your time.

The people you hang out with. The family you do or do not visit. The friends you meet and see regularly and the friends for whom reading Facebook updates will suffice. Who you call on the phone. The job you work tirelessly at or the one from which you are constantly looking for ways to escape. People who get handwritten thank you notes rather than a quick text. Being in the crowd cheering someone on versus saying you are there "in spirit."

Granted there are things you can't do. You may very well have to be there in spirit if you are sick, if you are on the other side of the country or if your spouse already committed you to spend your time elsewhere. You may have to slave at that dull job in favor of the benefits it brings your family. Life is full of compromises.

But time - spending time with the people you enjoy and working toward causes or organizations you really believe in - that is love. And my goal for 2013 is to devote more time to those people and activities I love.

Happy New Year, all!
